Epiphany School

Overview

Why does Epiphany School need your support?

Epiphany School, like most independent schools, is governed by a Board of Trustees tasked with ensuring the fiduciary stability of the School. Almost all independent schools, Epiphany included, rely on sources other than the tuition paid by students’ families to help finance the superior education the school seeks to provide.

To meet operating costs, most independent schools, Epiphany included, rely on tuition, Annual Fund contributions, fundraising events, and endowment income.

The expenses at an independent school fall into two major categories—operating and capital. Operating expenses are those that are necessary to a school’s daily operations, such as faculty salaries, curricular supplies, facilities maintenance, and need-based financial aid. To meet operating costs, most independent schools, Epiphany included, rely on tuition, Annual Fund contributions, fundraising events, and endowment income. Operating revenue and operating expenses of a school are frequently likened to a “checking account” which has a steady flow of money coming in, and a steady flow of money going out.

Capital expenses are those incurred by a school when the Board of Trustees wishes to make significant additions to the physical plant and/or endowment of the school. Capital expenditures are one-time improvements or—in the case of endowment—“deposits” to the school’s tangible or intangible assets. To pay for capital expenses, most independent schools, Epiphany included, rely on a Capital Campaign. Capital revenue and capital expenses of a school are frequently likened to a “savings account” which a school allows to grow whenever possible, and which is only spent on “big-ticket” items.

All Epiphany School constituents—parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, and friends—are asked to participate in supporting the School with philanthropic gifts as generous as their circumstances allow.
